Tip: Sometimes Free is Not Really Free

Because this is a shoe blog, you are welcome to center your thoughts on shoes when reading this article, although this can apply to anything given to you.  When you get something for "free", always look for hidden obligations.

  • What do they really want?
  • What can I and CAN'T I do?

In other words, what's the catch?  I always turn in a good gesture when I get something for free by trying to offer something in return that might be beneficial to the donor or the company (s)he is works for.  This provides SOME protection against the donor accusing you of taking advantage of him, her, or the system.  However, you will sometimes find that gesture alone is not enough.

Whenever possible, always pay for what you get for "free" to give yourself maximum ground to defend yourself (aka:  both legs to stand on) and maximum freedom to do as you will with the "free" item(s).  If the donor rejects payment, make sure you understand what the hidden catches are.  Sometimes paying for "free" items with merchandise purchases aren't enough.  This is what I mean by paying by showing good gesture vs. paying with money (paying directly for the "free" item(s)).

What are some of your experiences with ignoring your "too good to be true" gut feeling?
