Becoming Colour Proficient

There are some aspects of design you'd see in one thing that you wouldn't see in another.  For example, an interior decorator would have to worry about layout of furniture and fixtures whereas a shoe designer wouldn't.  However, whether you're a shoe designer/customizer, floral artist, or even a home interior decorator, they all need one thing in common, a person with a good sense for colour.  Sure you could slap any two or more colours together just for the sake of adding colour but does it look right...and if it doesn't look right, will the negative feng shui make you feel uneasy?  Colour does matter.  Not only that, but it also makes the ground work for the design totally different.  Just check out some of my before and after pics of my shoe customization postings.

I always had the creativity but I wasn't always good with colour.  No matter how hard I tried, I seemed to have way too many colours or the colours didn't jive.  However, within the past 10 years, there were 3 key things that was mentioned to me and once I understood them, my artistry took a different turn.  They were accent colours, colour separation, colour tie-in (balance).  Don't get me wrong.  I still catch myself making colour choices that make me notice that:  "there's still something not quite right", but I'm a heck of a lot better now than I was 10 years ago.
