Ever notice the holes in the heel portion of the shoes' sock liner or heel flap that's been permanently bent out of proportion? That's all from either sliding your shoes on and off without loosening up the shoelaces or from stepping on the heel of the shoe because you're lazy to bend down undo the laces so that your feet could slide in all the way.
Jimmy Fallon sawed into the back third of his shoes, just in front of the heel pocket to solve that problem. However, that wrecks the shoes and it doesn't look good. Nike took that concept and evolved it to a more elegant form - the Nike Go FlyEase. Check out this video below to see what I mean.
